The Rivian R1T initially launched in the range-topping Quad-Motor specification, but now Rivian will sell you a tamer Dual-Motor variant. Rivian also offers a Performance package that gives the lesser R1T nearly as much gusto as the Quad-Motor.
The Dual-Motor Performance is rated at 665 horsepower and 829 pound-feet of torque, versus 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet in the Quad-Motor.
The two-motor setup still allows the R1T to rip to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, just slightly slower than the Quad-Motor's 3.3-second run.
The R1T Dual-Motor is rated at 350 miles of range on the 21-inch wheels, with the rating sliding to 341 miles on the 22-inch wheels worn by our test car.
That's a 60-mile improvement over the Quad-Motor, although that truck was wearing all-terrain tires while this Dual-Motor ran on all-season Pirellis.
Instead of individual torque vectoring for each wheel like the Quad-Motor has, the Dual-Motor can only distribute the torque between the front and rear axles.
The lack of individual-wheel torque vectoring doesn't materially diminish on-road performance but could make the R1T Dual-Motor a bit less capable off-road.
The interior is identical to the Quad-Motor, providing the same high-quality materials and sharp 16.0-inch touchscreen.
In All-Purpose mode, the Dual-Motor will disconnect the rear motor in most driving situations to improve range.
On our 75-mph highway range test, the R1T Dual-Motor Performance traveled a solid 280 miles.
This R1T Dual-Motor rang in at $90,050, including $5000 for the Performance pack and $6000 for the required 128.9-kWh "Large" battery pack.
