The BMW X3 M Competition is the maximum-strength version of the high-performance compact-luxury SUV, a step-up from the already-impressive standard X3 M. The Competition's bona fides include a higher-horsepower twin-turbo inline-six; structural reinforcements to the body shell to better handle the stresses of cornering, braking, and acceleration; hard-core suspension settings for full-attack handling; and upscale interior appointments.
The X3 M Competition is an upgraded version of the X3 M. The two share the same S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. It's tuned to 473 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque in the X3M but is boosted to 503 horses and 479 pound-feet in the Competition model.
The X3 M models were refreshed along with the X3 lineup in 2022. Visual changes included new front and rear fascias, a slightly larger kidney grille, slimmer headlights, and reworked taillights.
The X3 M Competition gets 21-inch wheels rather than the X3 M's 20-inchers.
Standard all-wheel drive enables the X3 M Competition to launch hard. All-out starts light up the front tires on the way to a 3.2-second 60-mph time and quarter-mile blasts of 11.5 seconds at 119 mph.
The X3 M Competition steers, stops, and corners with almost as much agility as some sports sedans, but its suspension is overly stiff. Little feedback makes its way to the helm from the front tires.
The X3 M Competition offers multiple menus that enable adjusting the damper settings, steering effort, throttle response, transmission programing, and more. The possible combinations are overwhelming.
The X3 M Competition's interior is handsome and appointed in premium materials, including available two-tone leather and carbon-fiber trim.
Upgrading to the Competition model adds sport seats with adjustable seatback bolsters to clamp you in place during hard cornering.
The interior received a new center console and reconfigured touchscreen last year.
The standard eight-speed automatic has three shift modes that are adjusted via the stubby shifter independently of the other drive modes.
