The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is claimed to offer as much as 361 miles of range between charges. That helps to explain why we chose to take it for a road trip along Route 66. We found that it cruised with aplomb while offering comfort in a spacious, good-looking interior, and it invited us to wander off the highway and check out interesting roads along the route. This 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive sedan that seats five, but dual-motor all-wheel drive is also available.
We headed out in the Ioniq 6 for a road trip from Arizona to California along historic Route 66, and then pressed on to our test grounds for instrumented testing.
The rear-wheel drive Ioniq 6 SE has an EPA range of 361 miles.
Our Ioniq 6 did not have all-wheel drive, and that's why its weight was kept at 4225 pounds.
Our trip started in Phoenix and spanned 381 miles along Route 66 from Flagstaff to Barstow.
The Ioniq 6's impressive range gave us the confidence to wander away from the interstate and check out many Route 66 relics.
In a previous story, we called the Ioniq 6's look "arched and flowing," comparing it to "streamline moderne," an art deco style of the 1930s.
If you're tall, that beautifully arcing roof messes with rear headroom slightly, but the abundant legroom makes up for that.
As for charging, ElectrifyAmerica has added stations in such far-flung locations as Williams, Fenner, and Barstow, so we were able to explore confidently.

Much of the "Mother Road" runs near railway routes that are still very active today.
Desert sunsets are the best.
Oatman, Arizona, is known for its Old West ambiance, shootout reenactments, and free-roaming burros.
Front-seat space is abundant in the Ioniq 6, and the cloth seats found in the SE are quite comfortable and breathable over the long haul.
The view out of the Ioniq 6 is quite expansive, and the interior controls are well considered and approachable.
Much of old Route 66 runs along old pavement, but the Ioniq 6 SE calmly glides over neglected, sun-baked asphalt.
The funky wings at the ends of the dashboard would have sideview-camera monitors if glass mirrors weren't required in the USA. If that ever changes, the Ioniq 6 is ready.
The instrument panel can be set up in several ways, and if you don't like the daytime-default white background you can opt to use the nighttime black background throughout the day.
The four dots are Morse code for H, as in Hyundai. They're also charging status lights and can emit warnings of various colors in different situations.
