With the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition, the heavy-duty pickup truck adds its most off-road-capable models ever. The duo brings a host of exclusive equipment, including 35-inch mud-terrain tires and exotic spool-valve dampers, that allow owners to play hard when they're done working hard.
This is the first time GMC has applied the AT4X moniker to the heavy-duty Sierra. It leapfrogs the regular AT4 as the top off-road trim, with the AEV-enhanced model adding further fortification. Both are only offered on the 2500HD with the crew cab and the standard-length cargo bed.
Just because the AT4X is focused on off-roading doesn't mean it's not as capable as most other three-quarter-ton Sierras, as it can tow up to 18,500 pounds and carry a payload of up to nearly 3300 pounds.
Along with 35-inch Goodyear Territory Mud-Terrain tires and fancy Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, the AT4X features a 1.5-inch suspension lift, tough skid plates, and an electronically locking rear differential.
The Extreme AEV Edition improves on the AT4X by donning parts from aftermarket supplier AEV. Not only do its unique bumpers and wheels give it a distinct appearance, but the extreme model comes with tougher underbody armor.
Both off-road-focused Sierra 2500HDs are available with either a 401-hp gas-fed 6.6-liter V-8 or a Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 producing 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel drive and an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission are both standard.
The Extreme AEV Edition adds unique steel-stamped bumpers, with the front featuring a winch accommodation and recovery points. Add-ons such as this contribute to the AEV's higher curb weight, which is said to be 368 to 378 pounds heavier than AT4X versions.
These gloss-black 18-inch wheels are specific to the Extreme AEV Edition. Compared with the AT4X, the AEV model has a slightly worse approach angle of 29.8 degrees versus 31.6.
The AT4X and Extreme AEV Edition both benefit from interior updates found on lesser Sierra HD models, which were refreshed for 2024. The list of new equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 13.4-inch center touchscreen, and a head-up display.
GMC says the 2024 Sierra 2500HD AT4X and the Extreme AEV Edition will start production sometime this fall. While the company hasn't said how much either model will cost, we'd wager the former will start around $90K and the latter will approach $98K.
