Larger, more powerful, and with greater refinement, BMW's redesigned M2 coupe enters its second generation for the 2023 model year. Its mission as an elemental driver's car hasn't changed, but it borrows heavily from the one-size-up M4 model to become an even better driving machine.
The Mexican-made second-generation BMW M2 is rear-wheel drive only and starts at $63,195
Boldly flared fenders, accented by somewhat jarring ductwork, give the new M2 an aggressive stance.
The new M2 currently comes in five colors, with the light Zandvoort Blue exclusive to the model. Additional hues are expected down the road
Powering the M2 is a slightly detuned version of the S58 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six found in the grander M4 coupe. In this application, it produces a stout 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque
A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with an eight-speed automatic (replacing the previous seven-speed dual-clutch unit) as a no-cost option
Additional components borrowed from the M4 include its electronically controlled limited-slip differential, as well as its suspension links, adaptive dampers, and brakes
The M2's interior is dominated by BMW's Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch center touchscreen
Unsurprisingly, the M2 is highly adjustable via a slew of drive-mode settings
Ultra-firm and -supportive carbon-fiber sport seats are available as part of the $9900 Carbon package, though we only recommend them if you regularly plan to drive on racetracks
The M2's manual transmission and shifter, lifted straight from the M4, is precise and highly engaging, if slightly rubbery in feel
Despite the M2's larger overall dimensions, the two rear seats are still best left for people you don't like
The M2 rolls on 19-inch wheels in front and 20-inchers in back, wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. Stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are optional
