For 2023, the big change to the Toyota Highlander is that a turbocharged four-cylinder replaces a V-6 as the base engine.
The 2023 Toyota Highlander is the fourth model year for the current generation of the popular mid-size SUV.
A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder now serves as the standard engine, replacing the previous 3.5-liter V-6.
The incoming turbo four makes 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, compared to 295 horses and 263 pound-feet for the outgoing V-6.
With the change, EPA fuel-economy estimates inch up by 1 mpg, to 21/28 mpg city/highway (with all-wheel drive). Some front-wheel-drive versions do a bit better at 22/29 mpg.
The 2023 Highlander's handling is unexceptional, but the SUV rides comfortably.
