BMW M ventures into new territory with its 644-hp plug-in-hybrid SUV flagship, the 2023 XM. Yet despite this $159,995 SUV's broad spectrum of talents, its complicated design hinders its abilities as both a luxury vehicle and a performance machine.
The new XM is the most powerful and expensive SUV in BMW's lineup, sporting a base price of $159,995.
Motivating the XM is a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that combines a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
Powerful though its V-8 may be, the XM's stacked tailpipes emit a raspy exhaust note more befitting a V-6.
A lithium-ion battery with 19.2 kWh of usable capacity resides in the XM's floor and should provide an estimated 30 miles of electric range.
The XM's interior is beautifully crafted and is available in four design themes, several of which offer boldly contrasting color-and-trim combinations.
The XM comes standard with nearly every luxury feature and driver aid in BMW's toy box, from heated armrests to the latest curved-screen infotainment display.
BMW refers to the XM's spacious back seat as an M Lounge, though it's missing several of the key amenities, such as seat adjustability or window shades, found in lesser luxury vehicles.
The BMW XM drives quite well for something that weighs an estimated 6100 pounds. But we found its coil springs return a busy ride quality that's at odds with its luxury elements.
Big 23-inch wheels wrapped with summer tires are standard on the XM, with 22-inchers an option. All-season tires are not offered.
A highlight of the XM's interior is its its headliner, which is sculpted with a 3D geometric pattern and ringed by ambient lighting.
