Mazda has released a new version of the MX-30 EV that has a gasoline-powered rotary engine meant to boost range. This is Mazda's first rotary since the RX-8 sports car. We don't know when or if it will be coming to the U.S.
The new version of the MX-30 with the rotary is called the e-Skyactiv R-EV.
The rotary gasoline engine is a 74-horsepower, 830 cc unit with a single rotor.
It kicks in to charge the 17.8 kWh battery when the charge has been depleted.
A 167-horsepower electric motor supplies power to the front wheels.
Mazda claims a 53 mile range on a full charge, but the rotary engine and 13 gallon fuel tank provides extra range—though Mazda doesn't say exactly how much.
A special Edition R version features a two-tone color scheme and special badges inside
These rotary emblems are embroidered on the headrests...
