Why are we so excited about an electric SUV? Easy—Kia made the EV6 as good and practical as our favorite gasoline-powered SUVs and baked in fun. Did we mention it has an available Drift mode to make it easier to do donuts?
The 576-hp EV6 GT is new for 2023, and its wild performance does not disappoint. The GT-Line, pictured here, isn't as crazy but still exhibits fantastic driving characteristics.
A big change from the EV6 Wind that's built for range with 310 miles of maximum driving between charges, the high-powered GT version trades efficiency for 3.2 seconds to 60 mph. The GT-Line is a bit slower, with 320 horses and 446 pound-feet of torque. We measured a 4.5-second sprint to 60 mph for the GT-Line, which is still plenty quick.
Normal and Sport modes limit output to 460 horsepower, and Eco drops output to a far more conservative 288. Maximum torque, which has climbed from 446 pound-feet in the all-wheel-drive GT-Line to 545, is always available.
Its acceleration metrics shine red hot against other EVs. The Kia can spank the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance (60 mph in 3.7 seconds, quarter-mile in 12.7 at 101 mph), narrowly outrun the Porsche Taycan 4S (60 mph in 3.4 seconds, its quarter-mile in 11.7 at 120 mph) and the BMW i4 M50 (60 mph in 3.3 seconds, quarter-mile in 11.7 at 120 mph).
The EV6 GT gets an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential (eLSD). The quickest Kia ever also enjoys a chassis with quicker steering and a firmer suspension tune with adaptive dampers.
The pixel wars are very real, and every EV6 comes standard with a 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen.
Controls for the ignition, drive selection, heated and cooled seats, and the heated steering wheel are all easy to reach from the driver's seat.
The 2023 Kia EV6 GT starts at $62,695. The GT-Line is a little easier on the savings account with a starting price of $54,225.
The floating center console houses the start/stop button, a round gear selector, and a wireless phone charger.
The 800-volt architecture and 350-kW DC fast-charging capability adds 100 miles of range in just 11 minutes.
