The EarthRoamer LTi is simply unignorable. Some 29 feet long and 12 feet high, the LTi 52 weighs around 17,000 pounds, or about as much as your typical Class C RV. Seeing one breach the trees on an ORV trail is like watching the forest give birth to Paul Bunyan. It's built for long-term remote use as a roving substitute for a home or command center. EarthRoamer says Ford's factory 40-gallon diesel fuel tank combined with the additional 55-gallon unit can take you up to 1000 miles. We drove it through the Rocky Mountain National Park and up to Devil's Playground at Pikes Peak, and crawled along ORV trails averaging 9 mpg overall.

A four-wheel-drive Ford F-550 Lariat dually chassis cab supports this off-road fortress. The frame is extended 40 inches and reinforced for increased strength. The rear axle is converted to a single-wheel, and EarthRoamer's camper mount—a novel pivoting design—moves separately from the cab. Remote reservoir dampers are standard, as are air springs and heavy-duty anti-roll bars.

EarthRoamer prides itself on self-sustainability (not to be confused with sustainability, as the LTi weighs around 17,000 pounds). The Ford-stock 330-hp turbo-diesel 6.7-liter V-8's coolant circuit provides heat for the camper and water. When the 6.5-gallon hot-water tank's heat energy is depleted, an additional diesel-fueled heater kicks in.

EarthRoamer's camper shell is made of layers of foam surrounded by carbon fiber, sort of like a campfire s'more. The X-Guard paint—closer to bed liner than clear-coat—on the LTi we drove was the color of a Coleman stove and added $12,000 to the build. Scrapes from tree branches easily scrub away at the local carwash.

The kitchen is nice enough for HGTV. Magnetized drawers prevent the Shun knives from rattling, while plates fit snugly in Charcoal Oak cabinets. Scratch-resistant dual-pane windows muffle the hoots and coyote yodels of the wild night, and the LTi's available GOST security system and FLIR infrared camera add another level of comfort to those wary of killer fauna.

With the click of a button, the security system can lock the doors, roll up the awning, retract the stairs, and turn on every LED light. Just try to blow this house down, big bad wolves.

If you sent a four-wheel-drive Ford F-550 Lariat to boot camp, it would emerge as an EarthRoamer LTi. The EarthRoamer is large and chiseled. Built in Dacono, Colorado, amid a landscape of mountains and off-road trails, this glampsite on wheels can cover thousands of miles over whatever terrain a 29-foot-long, eight-foot-wide machine can navigate.
