The 2023 Toyota Prius is completely redesigned with a shocking new shape but the same stellar fuel economy.
The fifth-generation Prius sports a completely new look and is more powerful than before.
The car is once again offered as a traditional hybrid and as the plug-in-hybrid Prius Prime.
The 2023 Prius is 1.1 inches longer, 1.6 inches lower, and 0.9 inch wider than its predecessor.
The car also looks more planted, owing to a two-inch longer wheelbase and increased track width: 2.3 inches between the front wheels and two inches between the rears.
Fuel economy for the 2023 Toyota Prius tops out at 57 mpg city and 56 mpg highway for the LE. Higher-trim models with larger wheels return 52 mpg (city and highway).
As before, the Prius can be had with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The latter again uses an electric motor to power its rear wheels, and the more powerful motor allows all-wheel drive to be used under a wider array of conditions.
The well-designed new interior ditches some of the previous model's oddball elements.
Finally, the Prius places instrumentation directly in front of the driver rather than in the center of the dash.
The center touchscreen measures 8.0 inches on the LE, while a 12.3-inch unit (pictured) is optional on the XLE and standard on the Limited.
Rear-seat headroom under the sloping roofline is reduced, but legroom increases fractionally compared to the outgoing car.
The new Prius retains its practical hatchback body style.
A larger, 2.0-liter engine steps in for the previous 1.8-liter unit and on its own delivers 150 horsepower versus 96 horses before.
The 2023 Toyota Prius starts at $28,545 for the LE. The XLE is $31,990, and the Limited commands $35,560. All-wheel drive is a $1400 add-on.
The standard Prius sees its total power output jump: from 121 horsepower previously to 194 (FWD) or 196 horses (AWD). The Prius Prime now boasts 220 horsepower.
