We've bestowed our vaunted 10Best award on the CT4-V Blackwing for one simple reason: It's one of the best driver's cars in the world. Period. Basically a refinement of the previous-generation ATS-V, its greatest asset is its huge bandwidth. Here is a car that can serve as a comfortable—albeit small—luxury sedan, capable of riding smoothly and cruising lazily. And without sacrificing that capability, it can morph into a speed-crazed track monster at the touch of a few buttons. In between those two performance bookends, it's a fun and involving daily driver. That's what makes it one of the best sports sedans of all time.

The CT4-V Blackwing is based on the same underlying architecture first seen on the last-generation ATS and ATS-V sports sedans. Known as GM's Alpha platform, it was designed to drive and feel like the E36-, E46-, and E90-generation BMW 3-series—three of that company's best. The platform was so capable it was repurposed and used for the current-generation Camaro.

Look closely at the CT4-V and you might recognize that its sheetmetal is identical to the old ATS's from the windows up. The roof, roof pillars, and window openings are identical because the CT4 is essentially an ATS with all-new skin from the beltline down. No shame there; the ATS was a great sports sedan in its own right.

The CT4-V Blackwing is a reworked version of the ATS-V. Like its predecessor, it has a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 pushing power to either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic, plus big Brembo stoppers and sticky summer tires.

The CT4-V Blackwing's handling and ride can be fine-tuned through its extensive network of stability-control and traction-control systems. There are four drive modes, two customizable modes, and five steps in the Performance Traction Management system.
