The other half of the C63 S's powertrain is a rear-mounted drive unit featuring an electric motor with its own two-speed gearbox, plus an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Atop it sits a compact lithium-ion battery with 4.8 kWh of usable capacity.

The C63's rear drive unit is rated to produce 94 horsepower continuously or 201 horsepower in 10-second bursts, bringing the car's combined output to 671 horses and 752 pound-feet of torque.

A nine-speed automatic transmission with a clutch pack in place of a torque converter, along with a variable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, ties the C63's two powertrains together.

No fewer than eight drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race, Individual, Slippery, Electric, and Battery Hold) govern the C63's various systems.

We estimate that the new C63 should hit 60 mph in about three seconds and be capable of traveling around six miles on electricity alone. Mercedes claims the 3.7-kW onboard AC charger should be able to replenish the battery in about two hours via a 220-volt wall outlet.

The C63 also features standard three-way adaptive dampers, rear-axle steering, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. Carbon-ceramic front brake rotors and stickier Michelin Cup 2 R tires will be optional.

The C63 S will be recognizable by its E-Performance exterior badges and a subtle hood vent near its nose.

The C63 dresses up the recently redesigned C-class's interior with deeply bolstered sport seats, plus numerous system readouts in its 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 11.9-inch center touchscreen.
