The $253,290 2023 Audi R8 GT is a final sendoff to both Audi's V-10 and the mid-engine R8 supercar. Audi will make just 333 GTs worldwide, with 150 of those destined for the U.S. It's Audi's most powerful rear-drive car ever, with its V-10 getting the 602-hp state of tune previously reserved for all-wheel-drive variants.

The GT's $253,290 price may seem expensive, as it's $91,895 more than a regular 2023 rear-drive R8 coupe. But after checking all the option boxes that are included on the GT, the premium drops to $53,900.

U.S. GTs weigh a claimed 55 pounds less than a standard rear-drive R8, which is still available for 2023, and 120 pounds less than an all-wheel-drive coupe. A chunk of that weight reduction is from the GT's forged 20-inch wheels, as well as a reduction in sound-deadening material.

The GT borrows a few bits from the existing R8 lineup, including a carbon-fiber front anti-roll bar, shorter gearing for third through seventh gear in the dual-clutch automatic from the all-wheel-drive variant, and standard carbon-ceramic brakes.

A large rear wing, front splitter and canards, and other aero bits are GT-specific, as are the forged wheels and standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

The GT gets the shorter gear ratios from the all-wheel-drive R8 in third through seventh gear, and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic shifts even quicker in the GT.

New and only available on the GT is a feature called Torque Rear, which provides seven different levels of escalating slip allowed on the rear axle. You engage it by pushing the new checkered-flag button on the steering wheel and then turning the knob to pick the level. It's intended to be more of a fun mode than a track tool, and it is not a spin preventer.

The GT's fixed-back bucket seats are more relaxed fit than many others, neither too narrow nor with steep bolstering at their periphery. It kind of fits with the R8's more daily-driver vibe, which includes a very useful parcel shelf behind the seats.

Each GT is labeled with its number in the sequence sunk beneath the surface of the carbon-fiber center-console trim. The cars on hand for lapping at Circuito Monteblanco in southern Spain—some of the first off the line—had numbers 62 through 64. That's right, the more desirable early number cars get built later in the production cycle.

Of the 150 GTs destined for the U.S., there will be 50 each in Tango Red Metallic, Daytona Gray Metallic, and Mythos Black metallic. In other words, you can't get one in Suzuka Gray like this Euro-spec model.
