The GT4 ePerformance prototype previews the future of Porsche's customer racing program and shows just how exciting an electric track car can be.
At the Porsche Experience Center in Franciacorta, Italy, we took a ride in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance, an electric prototype that provides a preview of the future of Porsche sports and racing cars. Our time on the track in the electric Cayman prototype revealed an engaging, characterful machine with immensely impressive performance.
The 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance is based on the chassis from a 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport but measures 5.5 inches wider and features unique bodywork made from a natural fiber composite.
The ePerformance is powered by two electric motors providing all-wheel drive and fed by an 82.0-kWh battery.
In Qualifying mode, the ePerformance produces 1073 horsepower, while Racing mode is good for 603 horsepower.
The battery is split into three packs, with one situated just ahead of the windshield, one behind the passengers, and one pack at the passenger's feet.
Porsche says the ePerformance’s 900-volt electrical system allows the car to recharge from 5 to 80 percent in 15 minutes.

The ePerformance weighs about 3400 pounds, but the copious power allows it to zip through the corners without feeling heavy.
The two motors provide a visceral and incredibly loud noise, giving the ePerformance the emotion that is sorely missing from many roadgoing EVs.
The front electric motor is mainly there for regeneration, with the prototype able to recover around 50 percent of the energy it uses under braking.
The ePerformance is absurdly quick in a straight line thanks to all-wheel drive, and we topped out at around 150 mph on the main straight.
