An active noise-cancellation system is standard, and the Maybach feels exceptionally quiet and refined at cruising speeds.

The Maybach gets the extended wheelbase as standard—a 7.1-inch stretch over the regular S-class—all of which goes into rear-cabin space.

Standard equipment is predictably generous, including a 30-speaker Burmeister audio system, soft-close doors, a tablet-controlled rear-seat entertainment system, and luxurious trim. But there are still plenty of extra-cost options to boost the total.

Maybach buyers can choose a two-tone paint finish not offered on the regular S-class. This is an expensive option, but one that helps distinguish the car from the regular Mercedes version.

The Executive Rear Seat Plus package brings two individual rear seats that can be deeply reclined and also feature airline-style pop-up tables. Buyers can also specify their Maybach with a fridge between the rear seats and branded champagne flutes.

Power comes from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 with 48-volt hybrid assistance. This makes 496 horsepower and delivers impressively brisk performance, hucking the big sedan to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

The digital instrument panel offers a 3-D viewing mode. Most drivers soon switched it back to 2-D.
