The 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Black Edition packs 455 hybrid horsepower and works perfectly well as an everyday EV.
Volvo's T8 hybrid powertrain has always packed plenty of punch, but the 2023 models beef up the electric side to deliver usable EV capability—along with even more power. With its rear-mounted electric motor upsized from 87 to 143 horsepower and a bigger battery that provides 41 miles of EPA-rated range, the S60 Recharge can now function as an EV daily driver. Unless, that is, you care to dig deeper into the throttle, awaken the 2.0-liter inline-four, and summon all 455 combined horsepower.
The S60 Recharge now packs a combined 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque.
The Black Edition—available only on black or white cars—brings blacked-out trim and black wheels.
A supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four drives the front wheels. A 143-hp electric motor powers the rear wheels.
Cornering isn't the S60's strong suit, with its 0.85 g of skidpad grip limited by its intrusive stability-control system.
Electronic nannies also interfered with the S60's quarter-mile run. The electronics started pulling power at about 110 mph, as the car approached its 114-mph speed limiter. Nonetheless, it recorded a 12.5-second run at 112 mph.
The S60 Recharge hits 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
EPA-rated EV range is 41 miles, and we saw 34 miles of range during our 75-mph highway test.
Heavily bolstered sport seats are nonetheless supremely comfortable.
Inside, the infotainment system is now powered by Google, which means much better in-car mapping, along with Google Assistant.
The $750 climate package includes heated rear seats.
