The 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo looks even better than its coupe counterpart.
Back in the day, choosing a convertible version of a high-performance coupe meant sacrificing performance—weight went up, structural rigidity down. But modern retractible hardtop two-seaters like the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo deliver droptop motoring without many compromises. The Cielo weighs a claimed 143 pounds more than the coupe and will surely cost significantly more money, but from the driver's seat it feels just as lively as its coupe sibling. And it looks even better with the top down. Which is saying something.
The MC20 Cielo is the open-topped sibling to the existing coupe model, with a folding glass hardtop that can be raised or lowered in just 12 seconds.
Performance is undiminished, with Maserati claiming the Cielo has the same 2.9-second zero-to-62-mph time it quotes for the coupe, plus a 201-mph top speed.
Pricing hasn't been announced, but expect the MC20 Cielo to be the most expensive model in the Stellantis empire at roughly $250,000 to start.
The MC20's Nettuno V-6 uses a clever pre-ignition system and huge boost pressures to make 621 horsepower from just 3.0 liters. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard.
The roof can stow in just 12 seconds, and with the car in motion up to 31 mph.
The roof features an electrochromic glass panel that can be dimmed to reduce heat transmission on sunny days.
One ergonomic niggle is the need to operate the roof through the touchscreen interface, which is much less intuitive than a physical switch would be.
Maserati says that the new roof adds just 143 pounds of mass. Since the Cielo uses the same carbon-fiber tub as the coupe, the convertible's structural strength is undiminished. Choosing it does mean doing without the glass engine cover of the fixed-roof car.
The suspension has been retuned compared to the coupe, with the Cielo's softest GT mode chassis setting now more compliant.
Deliveries of the MC20 Cielo will begin in the second half of next year in the U.S.
