A legacy luxury brand confronts a promising newcomer: Mercedes's EQE sedan is bold, futuristic, and built upon an EV-exclusive architecture. Genesis's Electrified G80, on the other hand, seems relatively conventional at first glance, what with it being an electric version of the internal-combustion G80 model. We drove them back to back to see which offers the best combination of performance, luxury, and EV practicality.
We're comparing the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 with the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE.
The Genesis only comes one way, with a 365-hp dual-motor powertrain, while the EQE tested here is the EQE350 4Matic model with a 288-hp dual-motor setup.
The Electrified G80 shares its body and platform with the gas-powered G80 sedan, meaning it looks identical for the most part.
The EQE, meanwhile, is an entirely different car than the internal-combustion E-class, with futuristic styling and a unique platform.
Genesis is introducing electric versions of several models in its lineup. The GV60 is EV-only, and the Electrified GV70 is an electric version of the brand's compact SUV.
Mercedes, meanwhile, dubs its EV models as "EQ." The EQS is meant to be an equivalent to the S-class, and the EQE lines up with the E-class. There are also SUV versions of both.
Genesis incorporates many materials that are nice to the touch and attractive to look at inside the G80.
The Mercedes's cabin is also nicely built, although we're not a fan of its over-reliance on touchscreens and touch-sensitive controls.
The electric version of the G80 has slightly less room in the rear seat than the gas version due to the packaging of the battery pack, but it's still roomy for two passengers.
The Mercedes also has a spacious rear seat, and our car featured optional nappa brown leather for an extra $2990.
