The XRT brings adventurous styling to the Santa Fe, but the only available engine, a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, struggles to move the mid-size SUV with verve.
For 2022, the Santa Fe two-row crossover gains a new XRT variant, which toughens up the styling with redesigned bumpers and sidesteps. However, the XRT is let down by the sole engine option, a 191-hp 2.5-liter inline-four that barely gets the SUV to 60 mph in 10 seconds.
The Santa Fe XRT is all about appearances, adding chunkier front and rear bumpers and a blacked-out grille.
The XRT model also gains standard roof-rack crossbars and sidesteps, although the latter are unnecessary given the lack of a raised ride height.
Despite the styling, the XRT is not equipped for serious off-roading. It can even be had with front-wheel drive.
The 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four delivers a mere 191 horsepower. The XRT took 9.6 seconds to hit 60 mph in our test.
Merging onto the highway requires grit, with the XRT taking 12.3 seconds to reach 70 mph and trundling from 50 to 70 mph in 6.2 seconds.
For a large vehicle, the Santa Fe handles impressively, recording 0.85 g on the skidpad and keeping body roll in check.
The interior is well built, with soft materials in the right places making up for the use of hard plastics elsewhere.
The XRT's 8.0-inch touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The model also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
A wireless charging pad and four USB ports should keep all your devices powered up.
There is plenty of legroom and headroom in both rows, and the cloth seats proved to be fairly comfortable.
