VW's stunning electric van puts form over function, but that's the right call.
The Volkswagen van is back, and this time it isn't a rebadged Chrysler. We've been waiting a long time for the ID.Buzz, and we'll have to keep waiting, as it won't arrive in the U.S. till 2024.
The 2023 ID.Buzz is launching in Europe in both cargo and passenger configurations, with a shorter wheelbase that we won't get.
Based on the MEB platform, the ID.Buzz is mechanically an ID.4, with a rear-mounted 201-hp motor, rear-wheel drive, and a 77.0-kWh battery.
VW claims a 10.2-second 0-to-62-mph time. What did you expect, a fast Bus?
The Europe model is unlike the one we'll see stateside in a lot of ways. Most disappointing is that we won't get a power-deployed tow hitch.
That flush rear door glass looks slick but doesn't roll down. That might be an issue in the U.S.
Our ID.Buzz will be 10.6 inches longer than the Europe verison, still making it seven to nine inches shorter than the current crop of U.S. minivans.
The ID.Buzz offers an automated parking function. Teach it the moves and it can remember what to do once it's back in the same position—say, the entrance to your driveway.
Each ID.Buzz is delivered carbon-neutral, and recycled materials are used in the interior. Groovy.
An LED light bar across the dash flashes red if you have to hit the brakes and indicates the direction of upcoming turns from the nav system.
In the Europe model, a flat load floor is attained via an optional raised platform that matches the height of the folded second-row seats.
