The 911 Sport Classic marries a slightly detuned Turbo engine with a manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and retro design cues.
The 911 Sport Classic comes from Porsche's Heritage Design series, limited runs of cars intended to celebrate some of the sports-car maker's more famous eras. In the case of the SC, that's the one from the late '60s to the early '70s.
Period-inspired details include the ducktail spoiler—as debuted by the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in 1973—plus Fuchs-style alloy wheels, check cloth trim, and gold badging.
The Sport Classic is fractionally taller than other Turbo models because it also gets what's described as a “double-bubble” roof, which is a visual continuation of the car's full-length stripes.
The Sport Classic borrows the twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-six from the current 911 Turbo, although slightly detuned to 543 horsepower.
The reduction in engine output is because the Sport Classic also comes with a seven-speed manual gearbox, an option unavailable on the PDK-only 911 Turbo. That makes the SC the most powerful 992-generation car to have a stick.
The Sport Classic is also rear-wheel drive, unlike the Turbo and Turbo S, which are all-wheel drive only.
As well as various unique touches, the Sport Classic has also been given most of the 911's available dynamic options as standard. These include rear-wheel steering, the torque-vectoring rear differential, the PDDC active anti-roll system, and carbon-ceramic brakes.
Porsche claims a 4.1-second zero-to-62-mph time and a 196-mph top speed. Those numbers are 1.3 seconds and 3 mph behind Porsche's estimates for the 911 Turbo coupe, which has a DCT transmission, all-wheel drive, and more power and torque.
The last 911 Turbo we tested reached 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, so the expected 1.3-second deficit for the slightly detuned manual-equipped rear-drive Sport Classic suggests it might hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.
The new Sport Classic will be limited to 1250 cars worldwide, with an unknown number of those set to come to the U.S.
Porsche is charging a sizable supplement for the Sport Classic, with an MSRP of $273,750 making it nearly $100,000 more than the faster and more powerful 911 Turbo it's based on.
