The EQE53 is AMG's 677-hp take on Mercedes's new EQE mid-size electric sedan.
Car manufacturers face a big challenge in terms of driver engagement as they transition from internal-combustion engines to electric powertrains. While Mercedes-AMG continues to prove that it knows how to do performance, its new EQE53 sports sedan shows that there's still work to be done to make EVs as involving to drive as we're used to.
The EQE53 is AMG's third EV following the limited-production 2014 SLS Electric Drive and the more recent AMG EQS.
Sitting above the EQE350+ in Mercedes's lineup, the 53 model uses a pair of AMG-developed electric motors that produce a combined 617 horsepower, which can temporarily be boosted to 677 horses when activating the Race Start launch-control mode that comes with the optional Dynamic Plus package.
Other AMG revisions include a sportier suspension tune, optional carbon-ceramic brakes, and subtle styling changes.
EQE53 deliveries in the U.S. will start at the end of 2022. Although pricing has yet to be released, we expect a base price close to $100,000.
AMG claims the EQE53 can get to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, while the Dynamic Plus package's Race Start mode cuts that to just 3.2 seconds.
The EQE has a 90.6-kWh battery pack that supports AC charging at rates of up to 22 kW. DC fast-charging works up to a strong 170 kW, which is enough to recoup a claimed 112 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
A sound generator system called AMG Sound Experience is standard on the EQE53 and can be had in two versions: standard Authentic and an optional Performance mode.
The EQE53's power output is limited by its selected dynamic mode. Up to 308 horsepower is available in Slippery mode, 493 horses in Comfort, 555 in Sport, and 617 ponies in Sport+.
Updates to the EQE's cabin include AMG sport seats, new display graphics, and a shortcut button to take the huge central touchscreen directly to the car's dynamic settings.
