BMW's M4 Competition coupe benefits from a new all-wheel-drive option for the 2022 model year.
The 2022 BMW M4 Competition coupe (and its M3 Competition sedan counterpart) isn't lacking for power, what with its twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six churning out 503 horses and 479 pound-feet of torque. But based on the significantly quicker acceleration we recorded from the top-spec M4 with its newly added all-wheel-drive upgrade, that power benefits from a little extra help reaching the ground.
For the 2022 model year, all-wheel drive is now a $4100 option on the range-topping Competition versions of the BMW M4 coupe and M3 sedan.
The M4 Competition's all-wheel-drive hardware adds close to 100 pounds of mass to its curb weight, almost all of it on the car's front axle.
Regardless of its drivetrain, the M4 Competition is powered by a 503-hp version of BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six.
An excellent eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice in the M4 Competition.
Our M4 xDrive test car rocketed to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. For comparison, a rear-drive M3 Competition sedan needed 3.5 seconds in the same test.
Our example also posted 1.02 g's of skidpad grip and a 150-foot stop from 70 mph.
The M4's all-wheel-drive system features normal, 4WD Sport, and 2WD modes. Select the latter and deactivate the stability control, and the car can still smoke its rear tires with abandon.
A slightly quicker steering ratio—14.6:1 versus 15.0:1—also is part of the M4's all-wheel-drive upgrade.
Despite its extra weight, our test car returned a solid 29 mpg on our highway fuel-economy test, beating its EPA estimate by 7 mpg.
The 2022 M4 Competition xDrive starts at $79,995. Our test car stickered for $101,995, but we could do without its pricey carbon-ceramic brakes and constricting sport seats.
