If you want a minimalist rear-wheel-drive European coupe, the 230i is your best—and only—option.
Redesigned for 2022, the BMW 2-series sticks to its roots. The 230i brings punchy four-cylinder power, rear-wheel drive, and a base price of $37,345.
The 230i's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 255 horsepower, but these are BMW ponies—it sure feels like more than that.
Hitting 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and running the quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds at 101 mph, the 230i can hang with the likes of the Subaru WRX or the Chevy Camaro V-6.
The 230i really shines in the corners, posting 0.92 g of skidpad grip and showcasing the excellent balance that comes with near 50-50 weight distribution.
The BMW's brakes are also excellent, fade-free and notching a 152-foot stop from 70 mph—within a yard of the Maserati MC20's performance.
The 230i's long-hood/short-deck proportions recall the old 1-series. And its footprint is a few inches longer and wider than an E46 3-series coupe.
Whether you opt for the four-cylinder or the M240i's 382-hp six, an eight-speed automatic is the only available transmission.
Eventually, the 230i will be available with all-wheel drive, but for now it's rear-drive only.
BMW keeps throwing different names on what is essentially the same car, but the 230i traces its roots to the groundbreaking 2002 from the 1960s.
The 230i's grille is not only much smaller than that of the 4-series, its active vanes control cooling air with 10 different positions.
The 2-series shares its powertrains with the Toyota Supra, which is getting a manual transmission. So maybe there's hope yet for a three-pedal 230i.
