Toyota's luxury brand finally decides that BEVs are not just a passing fad.
Lexus has been a longtime purveyor of hybrids, but the new RZ450e is the brand's first battery-electric vehicle. It's related to the Toyota bZ4X and goes on sale later this year.
The 2023 Lexus RZ450e is based on the same platform as the recently introduced Toyota bZ4X, but has different styling, additional features, and more horsepower.
In size, the RZ450e sits between the Lexus NX compact crossover and the mid-size Lexus RX. Its EV platform allows for a longer wheelbase than the larger RX, however.
The front end echoes the Lexus spindle-grille shape, although here with no engine to cool, the section is largely closed off. The rest of the styling exhibits the complex surface treatment seen in other Lexus models.
Whereas its Toyota sibling is offered with a single motor and front-wheel drive or dual motors and all-wheel drive, the RZ450e is exclusively dual-motor all-wheel-drive.
Total output for the RZ450e is 308 horsepower, considerably more than the dual-motor bZ4X's 214 horsepower.
Lexus is offering just one battery-pack size, at 65.6 kWh, and range is expected to be between 200 and 225 miles, depending on equipment.
The onboard charger is a modest 6.6-kW unit, which means a Level 2 charge will take roughly 11 hours. At a DC fast-charger, the RZ450e's battery can be replenished at up to 150 kW.
The RZ450e will offer either a conventional steering wheel or, sometime after launch, a yoke connected to a drive-by-wire steering system.
The RZ450e will arrive in dealerships late in the year. Pricing has not yet been announced but is expected to start around $55,000.
The interior also features a 14.0-inch touchscreen and a standard panoramic sunroof that is electronically dimmable.
