Porsche's new benchmark for manual-transmission 911 greatness is aimed at its most hardcore fans.
Porsche's 992-generation 911 GT3 returns with a manual transmission as a no-cost option. Straight-line performance suffers compared to GT3s equipped with the PDK dual-clutch automatic, but the trade-off—a more involving drive experience—is worth it.
The GT3's manual is a six-speed, not the seven-speed available in lesser 911s.
The six-speed is a carryover from the previous GT3, while the seven-speed version is an adaptation of the PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Automatic rev matching is available in the GT3's Sport mode, or you can do it yourself in Normal mode.
You push down on the shifter to engage reverse, which is up and to the left of first gear. Make sure to check that the backup camera is not on before dropping the clutch.
The GT3's flywheel has all the mass of a fidget spinner, so you need to keep the revs up to get off the line without stalling.
Nail the launch, and the GT3 manual hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and runs the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds at 124 mph.
The PDK-equipped version is quite a bit quicker at the drag strip, reaching 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and covering the quarter-mile in 10.9 seconds at 129 mph.
According to our scales, opting for the manual shaved 23 pounds off the GT3's curb weight compared to the automatic.
The lightweight rear glass doesn't include a heating element, but the GT3 still has a rear defrost button. We just can't see that it does anything.
Our test car carried an as-tested price of $197,935, which would make it a bargain if you could actually find one at sticker price.
