Maserati celebrates its separation from Ferrari with its new 621-hp MC20 flagship supercar.
No longer the kid getting hand-me-downs from Ferrari, Maserati is asserting its new independence (and awesomeness) with the 621-hp MC20, a $215,995 mid-engine slice of carbon-fiber sexiness.
The MC20's engine is a new twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6, designed and built in-house by Maserati.
Dubbed "Nettuno," the V-6 uses a patented dual combustion chamber setup with two spark plugs per cylinder, which helps it put out 621 horsepower at 7500 rpm.
Struggling for traction off the line, the MC20 posted a 3.2-second 60-mph run.
The quarter-mile better reflects the MC20's power: 11.0 seconds flat at 131 mph.
The MC20's carbon-fiber tub is supplied by race-car builder Dallara.
An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with launch control routes power to the MC20's rear wheels.
Maserati designed the MC20's tub to allow three configurations: coupe, convertible, and full EV.
The interior is elegant if austere, enforcing the MC20's race-car vibe. And, importantly, the cabin looks like no other Stellantis product's.
As impressive as the MC20's numbers are, they'd be better if it didn't weigh in at 3757 pounds—450 pounds beyond what Maserati claims.
Maserati plans to only build six or seven MC20s per day at its Modena factory in Italy.
