With only 90 electric horsepower, taking advantage of the plug-in Sorento's EV range requires patience.
The fourth model in the sprawling Kia Sorento lineup, the Sorento PHEV pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 90-hp electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. With 32 miles of EPA-rated EV range, it can conceivably work as an EV in daily driving and a conventional hybrid on longer road trips.
The Sorento PHEV is all-wheel drive only and costs $6800 more than an equivalent AWD Sorento Hybrid. But it is eligible for a $6587 federal tax credit.
We found the PHEV to be slightly slower than the front-drive Sorento Hybrid we tested last year, despite its packing 261 horsepower to the Hybrid's 227 horsepower.
The Sorento PHEV ran zero to 60 in a middling 7.6 seconds. A RAV4 Prime is much quicker.
Accessing that 32 miles of range usually requires pushing the EV button on the console. Left to its own decisions, the car will run its gas engine even in low-load situations.
This Sorento does include an AWD lock button, which is novel for a plug-in hybrid. We didn't do any off-roading to test it.
An as-tested price of $49,960 is higher than even a top-of-the-line Telluride.
With only 90 horsepower from the electric motor, it doesn't take much throttle to awaken the 1.6-liter engine.
The electric motor is mounted ahead of the transmission, so you get the unusual sensation of an EV shifting gears.
At 4490 pounds, the Sorento PHEV weighed 395 pounds more than the front-drive Sorento Hybrid we tested last year.
