The lifted, plastic-cladded 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country wagon receives several notable updates and is now the only longroof V90 model available.
Station wagons are a staple of the Volvo brand, and the handsome V90 has carried the torch for years. However, until the 2022 model year, the lineup included two distinct versions: the sleek, special-order-only V90 and the lifted, all-wheel-drive-only V90 Cross Country. The latter is now the sole option in the U.S., and it’s gained updated tech, subtle styling changes, and a newly added hybrid system.
The 2022 V90 Cross Country is distinguished by its lifted suspension and plastic overfenders, which can no longer be painted to match the body color.
Inside, the changes to the 2022 V90 Cross Country are subtle. The center console no longer features a drive-mode selector, the digital gauge cluster has a new look, and the infotainment system has been updated.
For 2022, the V90 Cross Country replaces its old Sensus infotainment system with a new Android-based interface that still runs through a 9.0-inch vertically oriented touchscreen.
Included in the infotainment system's new features are Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store, which allows users to download apps such as Spotify. While the interface can be distracting, it responds well to voice commands and touch inputs.
The V90 Cross Country has an updated powertrain for 2022. Designated B6, it's a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four supplemented by an electric supercharger and a 48-volt starter-generator system.
The 2022 V90 Cross Country's B6 powertrain is rated at 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That's down 21 horses and up 15 pound-feet from the T6 powertrain it replaces.
In our testing, the 2022 V90 Cross Country hit 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and cleared the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 94 mph. However, that's slower than a 2017 V90 Cross Country T6 we tested, which hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and finished the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds at 99 mph.
The 2022 V90 Cross Country's EPA ratings rise from 24 mpg combined to 25. However, its 28-mpg return on our 75-mph real-world highway fuel-economy test is 1 mpg less than that of a 2017 version we tested.
The 2022 V90 Cross Country is composed and competent in most driving conditions, but there's little excitement from behind the wheel, and its ride might be too firm for some.
Compared with rival luxury station wagons such as the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is considerably less expensive. Its starting price of $57,295 is at least $10,000 cheaper than that of the Germans.
