The Land Rover Discovery carries the brand's go-anywhere sensibility into the three-row, family-SUV arena with mixed results.
The Land Rover Discovery has been a mainstay of the brand's lineup in the United States for several generations now. Yet while it continues to uphold Land Rover's off-road-oriented ethos, that ruggedness can hamper its day-to-day usability as a family-hauling SUV.
The Discovery's current look dates from 2017, when it replaced the previous generation, known as the LR4 in the United States.
Although the windswept styling makes the Discovery appear smaller than its predecessor, it's actually a bit larger.
A third-row seat is a key component of the Discovery's formula, but access to the way back is not easy.
With the third row in use, luggage space is a paltry 9 cubic feet.
Land Rover offers a choice of two engines in the Disco: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter inline-six, both turbocharged.
The six-cylinder, which we tested, makes 355 horsepower and pushes the Discovery to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
EPA estimates for the six-cylinder are a mediocre 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, and the four-cylinder isn't any better.
On-road handling is not the Discovery's forte, as we measured just 0.79 g of lateral grip.
Four-wheel drive is standard, and with a two-speed transfer case, an electronically locking rear differential, and a height-adjustable air-spring suspension, the Discovery can venture far afield.
The Land Rover also tows more than most rivals, with six-cylinder models rated for 8200 pounds.
