2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63 gets AWD, a soft top, and an adjustable screen.
The list of what's new on the 2022 SL is long, but it needs to be enough to return the SL to relevance.
The Mercedes-AMG SL63 gets a hefty dose of performance and design from AMG, and everything from the chassis up is new for 2022.
The SL63 looks and feels smaller than it is. Most of its increased length is in the wheelbase. Short overhangs and a strongly raked windshield make it look trim.
The front end looks similar to the current AMG GT, with the straked grille backed by aerodynamic louvers to control air flow.
Moving to a soft-top saves 46 pounds over the previous retractable hardtop, lowering center of gravity and freeing up space for rear seats and cargo. The fabric top is made of three layers sandwiching an acoustic mat and can open or close in 15 seconds at speeds up to 37 mph.
In the SL63, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 makes 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque and propels the car from zero to 60 mph in an estimated 3.1 seconds. One step down in the SL55, the same engine makes 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet, getting to 60 in an estimated 3.4 seconds. Both versions of the engine are backed by a nine-speed automatic transmission.
There are six driving modes in the SL63: five standard and one as an option for the SL55. Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport +, Individual, and Race modes are selected via a dial on the steering wheel and affect throttle, steering feel, and chassis dynamics.
For the first time the SL comes with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.
The multimedia touchscreen can be adjusted from 12 to 32 degrees to avoid glare when the top is down.
Above 50 mph, the active rear spoiler moves between five different positions to either optimize stability or reduce drag.
The rear seats aren't large enough for any adult—or even most children—to sit comfortably, but they do increase the sense of space in the cabin and make a useful luggage shelf, or a place for a pet to ride.
