A suspension lift, all-terrain tires, and other mods bolster the Forester's off-road credentials.
The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness joins the Outback Wilderness in Subaru's new off-road-oriented subbrand. With increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and a front skid plate, the Wilderness burnishes the Forester's off-road ability, but at some cost to on-road grip and fuel economy.
Based on the Premium trim, the Forester Wilderness costs $33,945, a $4625 upcharge over the Premium.
The Wilderness gets longer springs and dampers for a half-inch suspension lift, bringing ground clearance to 9.2 inches.
Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires help the cause on the trail but hurt it on the road, where lateral grip falls from 0.83 g in the Touring model to 0.77 g.
Braking also suffers, with the Wilderness's stop from 70 mph requiring 181 feet versus the Touring's 168 feet.
Fuel economy takes a hit in the Wilderness, too, falling from an EPA combined rating of 29 mpg to 26 mpg.
The Wilderness is the quickest Forester model, thanks to its unique CVT with a wider ratio spread. Its 60-mph time, 8.0 seconds, is 0.5 second ahead of the Touring despite using the same 182-hp 2.5-liter flat-four.
Revised bumpers increase the Wilderness's approach and departure angles, with the approach angle going from 20.0 degrees to 23.5 degrees.
The Wilderness gets a full-size spare tire, so owners won't be left navigating a trail on a space-saver donut.
Inside, the Wilderness's main differentiator is water-resistant StarTex upholstery.
A front skid plate is standard, with dealer-installed armor beneath the engine available as an option.
