As the entry-level model in the Jaguar lineup, the E-Pace serves as its most important brand ambassador, tasked with appealing to a new generation of buyers while delivering on the athletic handling and perky performance of the more expensive models with which it shares a showroom.
The 2021 E-Pace is a subcompact luxury SUV with sporting intentions and cheeky, mini-Jag styling.
Base models come with a 246-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but the P300 Sport gets a more powerful 296-hp version.
All-wheel drive is standard, and the E-Pace comes equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which we noted sometimes stumbles during downshifts, causing some jerkiness when slowing to a stop.
At our test track, the E-Pace P300 Sport galloped to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, and acceleration felt reasonably perky in our real-world driving evaluations. However, two key rivals—the BMW X2 M35i and the Mercedes-AMG GLB35—both outran the Jag at our test track by a substantial margin.
The E-Pace's ride is comfortable, even on the optional large-diameter 21-inch wheels, and its cabin is whisper quiet when cruising on the highway.
Handling is reasonably agile, although we think the brand's former entry-level model, the XE sport sedan, offered more driver engagement than the E-Pace does.
For 2021, the E-Pace adopts a new, larger 11.4-inch infotainment display and Jaguar-Land Rover's new Pivi Pro software interface. We've had trouble with this system in other recent models, but in the E-Pace it mostly performed as intended.
Elsewhere throughout the interior, drivers are treated to a nicely trimmed cockpit and plenty of luxury and convenience features.
Rear-seat riders aren't as well off here. The E-Pace's back seat is snug, even by subcompact SUV standards, and tall folks especially will feel the pinch as both leg- and headroom are unusually tight.
The base price for the E-Pace is a lofty $42,045—several thousand more than the GLB and X2—and our nearly loaded test vehicle came in at $59,805.
