The Hispano Suiza Carmen is an all-new EV hypercar bearing the branding of the famous prewar Spanish automaker.
Two versions will be offered. The regular Carmen boasts 1005 horsepower, and the more dynamically focused Carmen Boulogne, named after the location of some of the original company's most famous motorsport wins, makes 1100 hp.
Power comes from an 80-kWh, 700-volt battery pack capable of supporting huge peak flow rates. This drives four electric motors, two powering each rear wheel through a combined shaft and a single-speed reduction gearbox.
The battery pack weighs a claimed 1765 pounds, the total car 3725 pounds, with 60 percent of that mass resting over the rear wheels.
Hispano Suiza says the battery will support DC fast charging at rates of up to 80 kW, allowing for the pack to be taken from 30 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes.
The Carmen uses a carbon-fiber monocoque with the control-arm suspension front and rear attaching to carbon-fiber subframes. The carbon bodywork has been inspired by the design of the 1938 Hispano-Suiza H6C Dubonnet Xenia.
The Carmen boasts what Hispano Suiza describes as a "virtual differential," control software that produces a torque-vectoring effect across the rear axle despite the lack of any physical connection between the wheels.
The production version of the Carmen will feature regenerative braking with different levels selected by paddles behind the steering wheel, but this wasn't fitted to the prototype we drove. Just 14 of the regular Carmen and five of the Carmen Boulogne will be produced, priced at $1.73 million and $1.92 million, respectively.
