More power and standard equipment come to Mercedes-AMG's entry-level GT coupe and roadster for the 2021 model year.
Horsepower may not be everything, but you do expect a certain abundance of it in a six-figure sports car with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, such as Mercedes-AMG's GT coupe and roadster. For the 2021 model year, the GT's entry-level models deliver a more appropriate number of ponies.
Highlighting the GT's enhancements for 2021 is a boost to 523 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque, increases of 54 horses and 29 pound-feet versus 2020 models.
All GT models continue to employ a rear-mounted seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transaxle.
We haven't previously tested a base GT roadster, but the 2021 model dashed to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, which is 0.1 second quicker than the slightly lighter 2020 GT coupe we last tested.
The 2021 GT roadster's 11.5-second quarter-mile pass at 127 mph is 0.3-second quicker and 7-mph faster than the previous GT coupe's.
Base GT models also gain additional standard equipment for 2021, including a lighter lithium-ion battery, a Race drive-mode setting, the AMG Ride Control sport suspension with adaptive dampers, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential in place of a simpler mechanical unit.
Aided by 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires, our roadster test car posted a decent 1.00 g of grip around the skidpad and a 155-foot stop from 70 mph.
Reveling in the GT's additional horsepower reduced our average fuel economy to 14 mpg.
The GT's standout feature arguably is the thunderous V-8 noise—up to 86 decibels at full throttle—produced by its active exhaust system.
Our car had the new $7150 GT Stealth Edition package, which builds on the existing AMG Night Styling and Interior Night packages to blacken or darken pretty much every shiny bit on the car.
Inside the GT's rather tight confines, you sit low and look out over a cartoonishly long hood. Dropping the roadster's top, which takes only 11 seconds and can be done at up to 31 mph, enhances the airiness of the cabin and lets in all the snarls and pops from the exhaust.
