The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is the new performance-oriented addition to the Blue Oval’s electric SUV lineup.
Pony-car enthusiasts may still be a bit sore about Ford badging its impressive Mach-E electric crossover as a Mustang. Fortunately, the new 480-hp GT and GT Performance Edition models finally deliver some of the excitement that’s been expected from a car with the galloping pony emblem.
Compared to lesser all-wheel-drive Mach-E models, the new GT gains a more powerful electric motor on its front axle that results in a combined 480 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Opting for the sportier Performance Edition version ups that torque figure to 634 pound-feet.
GT models come exclusively with the Mach-E's larger 88.0-kWh battery pack, which will increase to 91.0 kWh of usable capacity for the 2022 model year. Range estimates stand at 270 miles for the regular GT and 260 for the Performance Edition.
The Mach-E GT is distinguished by its revised front and rear bumpers, darkened grille with illuminated pony badges, red-painted brake calipers, and wider 20-inch wheels and tires.
The Performance Edition is a $5000 package atop the GT's $61,000 base price.
Along with its additional torque, the Performance model also brings larger front brake rotors, adaptive magnetorheological dampers, Ford Performance sport seats, and sticky summer tires in place of the regular GT's all-seasons.
Ford claims the standard Mach-E GT will get to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, with the Performance model cutting that time to 3.5 seconds.
Unique to the GT model is a new Unbridled Extend drive mode, which is designed to sustain the car's performance over longer spirited runs.
Activating Unbridled Extend makes the Mach-E GT's steering more linear, sharpens its brake response and removes all regen, and adds a rear bias to the front-to-rear power split. It also slightly increases the volume of the synthesized powertrain soundtrack played through the stereo speakers, but that feature can be turned off if it's not your thing.
While the Mach-E GT's inherently quiet electric demeanor may sap some of its enjoyment compared to traditional, fire-breathing Mustangs, it is startlingly quick and displays an impressively agile and balanced handling character on the road.
Aside from its more supportive front seats, the GT's interior is largely the same as in other Mach-E models. The expansive center touchscreen measures 15.5 inches.
