Driving VW's new dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version of its ID.4 electric crossover makes for a far more satisfying experience.
With a single, rear-mounted 201-hp motor, VW's standard ID.4 is a fine if rather unexciting everyday machine. However, the addition of the new all-wheel-drive Pro S model's second 107-hp motor changes things considerably. VW's electric crossover just got a lot more entertaining.
With the front and rear motors working in concert, the ID.4 AWD has 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque on tap.
The ID.4 AWD hustles to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, considerably quicker than the rear-wheel-drive version's 7.6 seconds.
All-wheel drive adds 223 pounds to the ID.4, and in quick corners, the dampers sometimes struggle with the car's mass.
We also found brake modulation to be an issue, as the pedal offers little feedback, which makes smooth stops a challenge.
The ID.4 AWD's range is just slightly less than that of the single-motor version at an EPA-estimated 249 miles for the ID.4 Pro and 240 miles for the Pro S.
The ID.4 is compatible with Level 1, 2, and 3 charging, and VW offers three years of free charging on the Electrify America network.
A black-painted roof and silver accents on the C-pillars are part of the $1500 Gradient Package, as are 20-inch wheels
The cabin is roomy, and there's a playfulness to the interior design that's charming.
The leatherette-covered seats in the Pro S feature a massage function.
The Pro S has a 12-inch central display (the Pro gets a 10-incher), but the ID.4 relies entirely too heavily on haptic-touch switchgear.
