A futuristic interior and a huge battery define Benz's first clean-sheet electric car.
The EQS's clean shape delivers a coefficient of drag as low as a claimed 0.20, a new record for production cars.
The 107.8-kWh battery helps the EQS 450+ register a 485-mile range on the WLTP test procedure used in Germany. That should equate to about a 360-mile range in the U.S.
The rear-drive EQS 450+ has 329 horsepower, with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive 580 4Matic packing 516 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.
The rear steering can countersteer the rear axle up to 10 degrees.
Base price will probably be around $110,000 for the 450+ and $185,000 for the 580 4Matic.
No surprise, but Mercedes says the EQS's twin-motor all-wheel-drive system responds faster than any of its mechanical all-wheel-drive systems.
The clamshell hood isn't removable except for service—another Benz first. There's a flap to add washer fluid.
After three hours of driving, the EQS580 still showed more than 250 miles of range.
The EQS doesn't have front trunk space, but its rear storage is bigger than you'll find in the S-class.
The optional Hyperscreen stretches across the entire dash and measures almost 57 inches.
