The RAV4 TRD injects some personality and rugged flair into its most popular SUV.
The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is the wildest nonhybrid version of Toyota's bestselling crossover thanks to a revised suspension, rugged looks, and all-terrain tires.
The RAV4 TRD uses the same 2.5-liter inline-four found in other Toyota products. It produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
Even with all-terrain tires, our RAV4 TRD managed 25 mpg on average and 30 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test.
The RAV4 TRD has the same fender flares found on the Adventure models, in addition to a unique black grille, black 18-inch TRD wheels, and black badging.
Inside the cabin there's red stitching on the seats, dashboard, steering wheel, center console, and door panels, as well as red trim on the console and in the gauge cluster.
The RAV4 TRD rides on Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail 01A tires, which favor off-road performance but are not totally out of sorts on pavement.
The TRD also has a revised suspension with retuned dampers and special red TRD coil springs.
Our test car came equipped with the $1015 TRD Off-Road Weather package, which includes a heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated seats. It also has rain-sensing wipers with a de-icer function.
When equipped with the premium audio package, the RAV4 TRD gets the new 8.0-inch infotainment screen and an 11-speaker JBL sound system.
The $549 running boards look a bit silly on a vehicle that even your grandma should be able to get into easily.
At nearly $43,000, our test vehicle was pricey, but a well-optioned TRD Off-Road can be had for less than $40,000.
