Based on Ford's next-generation mid-size-truck platform, the 2021 Bronco is tough looking and ready to bring the fight to the Jeep Wrangler. We got our first stint behind the wheel near Austin, Texas, which revealed it to be as refined as it is rugged.

The Bronco's four-door model adds almost 16 inches to both the wheelbase and overall length, which mutes the two-door Bronco's proportions slightly. Surprisingly, however, the back-seat space is similar between the two versions, as well as to that of a four-door Wrangler.

Engine options are a 300-hp turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a 330-hp twin-turbo V-6 from the F-150. The seven-speed manual is available only with the four-cylinder, while a 10-speed automatic is available across the board.

Trim levels all have rugged, outdoorsy names: Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, and Wildtrak. There's also a loaded First Edition. They generally add increasing levels of both feature content and off-road capability, but any trim, including the base, can be had with the Sasquatch package that adds front- and rear locking differentials and the biggest 35-inch-diameter mud-terrain tires.

Wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches, with the hero option being the 35-inch Goodyear Territory mud-terrain tires on beadlock-capable 17-inch wheels that are part of the Sasquatch package.

The Bronco's top, doors, fender flares, and even the fenders are designed to be easily removed.

Unlike the Wrangler, the Bronco has an independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, which seriously improves its on-road sophistication.

The Bronco has two USB power points at the base of the windshield, plus a universal mount in the center of the dash where a GoPro or phone can be used to capture your adventuring.

The Bronco's drive mode selector dial alters the four-wheel-drive setting, front- and rear differential lockers, front anti-roll-bar disconnect, as well as throttle response and steering effort. Just pick your surface and go.

Interior options include vinyl seats and drain plugs in each footwell for easy cleaning.
