The 2021 Lexus UX200 impresses with its luxury features and interior environment but falls short in performance.
We tested the 2021 UX200, which is the least expensive Lexus model on sale. Although it's styled up like an SUV, the UX200 is more like a hatchback in practice. That might appeal to city dwellers and empty nesters who don't need the space of a larger crossover.
The Lexus UX shares a platform with popular Toyota models such as the Prius hybrid, the Corolla hatchback, and the C-HR SUV.
It wears a more upscale exterior design than the models it shares its mechanical parts with, and it looks appropriately upscale.
The UX200 is powered by a 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder and is available only with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid UX250h.
Inside, the UX200 is dressed up in Lexus's best. It features a digital gauge display, comfortable seats, soft leather upholstery, and a nicely designed dashboard with well-placed controls.
While the UX200 offers a decent-sized trunk, it's certainly no match for larger rivals that offer even more space. The UX's interior is more similar to a compact hatchback than a crossover SUV.
Performance is disappointing from the four-cylinder powertrain. At our test track, the UX200 required 8.5 seconds to reach 60 mph and ran the quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds at 86 mph.
On the road, the UX200's driving dynamics are fairly refined. Its ride is compliant and the cabin is quiet while handling feels more spry than expected.
Additional cornering grip and a more powerful engine would help the UX200 deliver a more convincing luxury package.
Rivals such as the Audi Q3, BMW X2, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-class do a better job of providing SUV practicality as well as driving enjoyment.
For city-dwelling buyers or those who don't need the space, the UX200 may offer a premium cabin and a compelling design, but its unrefined powertrain takes us out of the luxury fantasy.
