From the Archive: A new 16-valve engine with a trick catalytic converter not only helps the Civic DX meet strict emissions standards, it also makes for a much quicker hatch.
The 1996 Honda Civic DX now shares its engine with other Civics, and that's a good thing.
The two-piece hatch is gone, replaced by a traditional one-piece.
It doesn't look quick, but the DX ran 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, 2.7 seconds quicker than its predecessor.
A stretched wheelbase nets five more cubic feet of cargo space.
The DX's interior does not say that this is $11,895 car. (Which it is.)
The 1.6-liter was optimized for low-emissions-vehicle status, but its 106 horsepower make the Civic a lot of fun.
