Volvo's new electric XC40 is an attractive and powerful analog of its conventional XC40 compact crossover, albeit one with modest range.
You'll be forgiven for mistaking Volvo's first fully electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge P8, for a regular XC40 crossover—until you see it rocket away from a green light.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge is EPA rated at 208 miles of range from its 75-kWh battery and two electric motors. The battery can charge from zero to 80 percent in around 40 minutes at a DC fast-charging station.
The Recharge looks almost exactly like its gas-powered twin, but you can distinguish the EV by its closed grille and model-specific badging.
The Recharge has a vertically oriented touchscreen infotainment system, familiar to us from other Volvos, and is equipped with Google Voice Assistant.
Standard active safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, collision warning, and collision avoidance.
The XC40 Recharge has the same amount of space for passengers and for cargo as does the gas-powered XC40, thanks to a modular architecture that was designed with electrification in mind.
Our test car came packed with options, including adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras, an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system, a wireless charging pad, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The standard interior is all black, but the bold orange carpet we appreciate in the gas-powered XC40 is also an option in this electric model.
In addition to the cargo space behind the second row, there is a small amount of storage space in the front of the car under the hood.
A panoramic roof with a powered sliding sunshade is standard in the XC40 Recharge.
