Focused on handling and driver engagement, Bentley's new top Continental coupe does more than just add power.
The Bentley Continental Speed has always been the powerhouse of the lineup, but this new one barely moves the needle on straight-line performance. Instead, it shines in the corners.
Output for the 6.0-liter W-12 increases from 650 horsepower, a 24-hp increase, but torque remains the same as the regular W-12: 664 pound-feet.
Top speed increases from 207 mph to 208 mph. In other words, not so much that you'd notice.
The Bentley Continental GT Speed should hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, which is 0.1 second ahead of the non-Speed W12 model.
New turbochargers are intended to sharpen engine response.
The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission isn't all that happy on a track, upshifting automatically at the redline even in manual mode.
With rear-wheel steering, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and active anti-roll bars, the Speed is surprisingly agile for a car that weighs more than 5000 pounds.
Bentley toned down the pops and crackles from the exhaust. They say European regulations factored into the decision, but maybe it had something to do with contrived crackles being unbecoming to a Bentley.
The Speed's quilted seats belie its mission as a grand tourer rather than a track rat.
The carbon-ceramic brake rotors measure 17.3 inches up front, which Bentley says makes them the largest in the world.
The Speed's sport mode is more charismatic, although Bentley wouldn't be so uncouth as to mention the phrase "drift mode."
