Completely redesigned for 2022, the Hyundai Tucson compact SUV embraces adventurous design, inside and out.
Hyundai's new 2022 Tucson is larger than its predecessor and gains hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the latter targeting 32 miles of EV range. But the compact crossover's adventurous design is where it stands out.
The new Tucson's exterior, with its swollen fenders and cascade of daytime running lights in the grille, will not be mistaken for its predecessor—or anything else.
The interior is also completely overhauled, with twin 10.3-inch screens dominating the design.
One interior quibble: no volume knob. But there is a toggle on the wheel.
The steering wheel is aggressively strange with four spokes in the lower half. But it feels good.
The 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder seems cloned from the Nissan Rogue's engine. But the Hyundai's four is attached to an eight-speed automatic rather than a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
The shifter is a push-button setup. Maybe someday the Santa Cruz's shift lever will find its way here.
The hybrid makes 226 combined horsepower and delivers 37 mpg on the EPA combined cycle.
The PHEV gets an upsized electric motor (90 horsepower rather than 59 in the regular hybrid) to take better advantage of its EV mode. It also has a higher total system output at 261 horsepower.
Prices start at $26,135 for a base front-drive SE and climb to near $40,000 for a hybrid Limited. The to-be-priced plug-in will surpass $40K in Limited guise.
Other markets will get a Tucson with a wheelbase that's shorter by three inches.
