Boasting a bold new design and myriad improvements across the board, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander finally returns to relevance.
With Nissan supplying the platform, powertrain, and various other bits, Mitsubishi built its most compelling version of the three-row Outlander. The 2022 Outlander has the distinct styling, engaging driving manners, handsome interior, and popular features to go head to head with today's top compact crossovers.
The new Outlander distinguishes itself from other compact utes with extrovert bodywork and three-row seating. The VW Tiguan is the only other competitor to offer three rows.
While passengers in the first two rows enjoy generous accommodations, the third row omits space for frivolous items such as legs.
Mitsubishi scrapped the Outlander's old 166-hp four and 224-hp V-6 engines and adopted a 181-hp 2.5-liter inline-four from Nissan. Paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), its acceleration times are competitive, but the Outlander's passing power is noticeably lacking.
The new Outlander and the VW Tiguan are the only compact crossovers that offer 20-inch wheels. Shod with wider-than-average all-season tires, the Mitsubishi generated 0.85 g on the skidpad.
The Outlander's platform is on loan from Nissan, but Mitsu went about tuning the Outlander's suspension and all-wheel-drive system separately.
Perhaps the most notable improvements to the new Outlander occur inside, with a significantly nicer design and upscale materials, as well as more modern features and tech.
An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard on the base Outlander, but every other trim has a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. A configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is available on all but the base model.
The 2022 Outlander with all-wheel drive is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. A similarly equipped Rogue is rated at 25 mpg city and 32 highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, the Nissan returned 32 mpg, compared with the Mitsubishi's 26-mpg result.
The Rogue may have better EPA fuel-economy ratings and real-world highway mpg than the new Outlander, but the Mitsubishi's powertrain warranty spans 10 years or 100,000 miles (five years and 40,000 miles longer than Nissan’s warranty for the same powertrain) and it's rated to tow 2000 pounds (650 more than the Rogue).
The Outlander has a starting price of $26,990; upgrading from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive costs $1800 on all trim levels. As tested, our fully loaded, top-tier Outlander SEL AWD stickered for $38,590. That’s about the same as a turbocharged Mazda CX-5, our perennial favorites in this class.
