The 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQA250 is the electric version of the GLA250 crossover, on sale now in Europe and possibly heading to the United States.
The EQA250 trades the GLA250's 221-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder for a 188-hp electric motor and 66.5-kWh battery pack. This is a retrofit rather than an EV-exclusive platform, and that approach incurs some drawbacks.
No front trunk here. The EQA250's motor lives in the same spot the GLA250's engine does—under the hood.
Mercedes claim a zero-to-62-mph time of 8.9 seconds, far off the 6.3-second zero-to-60-mph time we clocked in a GLA250 4Matic.
An all-wheel-drive version and one with increased range are in the works, but for right now the EQA is front-drive only.
Range is estimated at 302 miles on the unrealistic European cycle. We saw more like 150 miles, but that included hard driving, including visits to the EQA's 99-mph electronic limiter.
As an adaptation of an internal-combustion vehicle, the EQA's battery eats into passenger and cargo space and results in a knees-up sitting position for rear passengers.
As a small car that weighs almost 4500 pounds, handling is not spirited. The winter tires on our test car didn't help, but even with summer rubber, this won't be confused with an AMG.
With 277 pound-feet of torque, the EQA feels strong around town but fades fast as speed increases.
The all-wheel-drive version will offer 268 horsepower but will be even heavier.
Programming your destination in the navigation system helps the car plan its energy deployment according to upcoming topography, and Mercedes claims this can help the EQA eek out more range.
EQ-exclusive wheels and a new front- and rear-end treatment give the EQA some visual distance from the GLA.
