The 2021 Genesis GV80 is the brand's first SUV, and it's a gorgeous and sumptuous mid-size entry, nabbing a 10Best award from us this year.
This lesser 2.5T model is powered by the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder as the Hyundai Sonata N Line and the Genesis G80. In the GV80, it makes 300 horsepower.
The GV80 starts at $49,925. Our fully loaded model came in at a still-reasonable $64,825, thousands less than a no-option Porsche Cayenne.
There's a third row available but only on one particular trim on the V-6-powered 3.5T model. All 2.5T models seat five.
The second row is about average for the mid-size luxury segment—accommodating for adults, for sure, but not huge. However, it does have an above-average ability to recline.
There are just two large option packages available, the $4350 Advanced package (20-inch wheels, 21-speaker Lexicon audio, leather seats, a couple additional active-safety features) and the $8750 Prestige package (22-inch wheels, adaptive damping, remote-controlled parking, heated second-row seats, and much more).
The materials are top shelf. Check out the gorgeous quilted seats and the open-pore wood trim. Although our test car had a more subdued black and brown color combination, there are also bolder choices, such as a blue over tan.
Even with the four-cylinder, the GV80 performs strongly, beating out the other four-cylinder models in the class with a sprint to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
The engine is a bit gravelly and grainy at times. The interior noise level on this 2.5T model was higher during both acceleration and when cruising at 70 mph than our earlier 3.5T test car.
The GV80 is balanced and athletic when driven well above a friendly pace. Also—fun fact—its weight distribution is much closer to 50/50 front to rear than the current BMW 4-series coupe's.
With the GV80, Genesis is really evolving past a competitive entry at a cut-rate price. It's a standout, and we chose it for our coveted 10Best list this year.
