The new Highlander Hybrid stands out in a sea of crossovers as the only one with three-row seating and EPA estimates in excess of 33 mpg.
Fresh off a full redesign, the new Toyota Highlander enters its fourth generation with prettier styling, enhanced technology, and a much improved, fuel-sipping hybrid model. We tested a range-topping all-wheel-drive Platinum-trim model, which showcased the Highlander's newfound luxuriousness as well as the hybrid's unique attributes.
The new Highlander has a more chiseled appearance, and we appreciate that Toyota didn't diminish it with faux off-road styling. Hybrid models look virtually identical to their gas-only counterparts, except they have blue accents in the Toyota logos on the front and back as well as some unique badges.
Rolling on a set of 20-inch rims, our Highlander Platinum hybrid example might not be the most eye-catching mid-size crossover, but it's definitely more distinct than its predecessor.
Inside, the new Highlander impresses with a contemporary design and improved material quality. Our Platinum test vehicle looked even more expensive with its exclusive Glazed Caramel leather upholstery and upscale amenities.
Along with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the cabin's fanciest features include a 1200-watt JBL stereo, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof.
While we love the Highlander's flexible second- and third-row seats that easily fold flat, we're less impressed with the tight and uncomfortable space in the far back.
The hybrid Highlander's calling card is its fuel economy. The EPA estimates the all-wheel-drive version will earn up to 35 mpg city and highway. Those figures are significantly higher than the gas-only, all-wheel-drive Highlander, which is rated up to 20 mpg city and 27 highway.
Not only is the Highlander hybrid very efficient in urban environments, it's also thrifty at highway speeds.
The new Highlander hybrid has made dramatic improvements in fuel efficiency compared with the last generation. That's largely due to the switch from a V-6 to a lighter four-cylinder engine. While the smaller engine is less powerful, the trade-off hardly affects acceleration times.
The Highlander now rides on Toyota's TNGA-K platform that also underpins many of the company's newest models. This contributes to its refined road manners as well as its cohesive and satisfying controls.
With an as-tested price of $51,068, our all-wheel-drive Highlander Platinum hybrid isn't exactly affordable for everyone. However, by opting for fewer creature comforts and front-wheel drive, the entry-level LE hybrid can be had for as little as $40,975.
